Travelling overland though Fever Tree forests, the land changes from broad belts of savannah to narrow, palm-studded beaches and the crystal clear oceans & coral reefs of the northern tip of the Bazaruto Archipelago - still one of the most beautiful places in Africa.

Declared a national park in 1971, the whole area between the mainland and the 150-fathom mark is a protected world-class conservation sight. The Bhejane team has obtained permits so that we can thoroughly explore the tropical beaches, discovering the wonders of the coral lined coast. With luck, we may even encounter the endangered dugong!

Home to over 180 bird species and 2000 fish species, you’ll have the opportunity to spot some of the world’s most exalted animals in their natural habitats. From dolphins and whale-sharks to sea turtles and giant lobster, the waters surrounding the islands are home to more than 80% of all marine fish families of the Indo-pacific.

This adventure requires a 4 x 4 due to the very sandy terrain in parts of the route.

08 Oct 2026 - 18 Oct 2026

Day 1

Dumela Camp, Limpopo Transfrontier National Park

Our crew will meet you at Pafuri Border Post to assist with your crossing (if required) just after lunch.  From here we travel a mere 8kms into the Limpopo Trans Frontier National Park to our new camp on the banks of the Mugano Lagoon - the perfect place to begin our Mozambique adventure.  This is Dumela Camp

In the evening, whilst sitting around the campfire, and before being spoilt with the first of many wholesome meals, your tour leader will provide a briefing on the next 11 days. During this briefing, hand held two-way radio’s will be distributed to all drivers.

Day 2

Wild Camping

After a good night’s rest and an early breakfast we head out through the huge fever tree forests of the Limpopo valley, along a two-spoor sandy track until we reach the village of Mapai and the Limpopo Crossing.

Travelling eastwards to the village of St. Jorge de Limpopo and onward in the direction of Machaila stopping for a light picnic lunch along the way before reaching the banks of the Shefu River where we set up camp for the night.

The camping will be “wild” but the crew will set up portable toilets, and dinner and breakfast will be as good as ever.

Day 3

Inhassoro

Early to rise and after a hearty breakfast, we break up camp and continue on to Machaila. Still on a sandy two-spoor road, with some very interesting old steel bridges dating back to the old colonial logging industry, we continue eastwards to the town of Mabote, where we encounter our first signs of civilization.

We continue eastwards on a gravel road until we reach the main Maputu-Beira “highway” and turn north towards Vilanculos and ultimately our destination at Inhassoro.

Day 4

Inhassoro

Today we visit the beautiful Paradise Island in the bay by boat. The trip takes about 45 minutes and provides an opportunity to see both dolphins and turtles in the crystal clear waters of the Bazaruto Sanctuary.

We spend the day exploring the island, relaxing on unspoiled beaches and snorkelling on beautiful coral gardens and later enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach.  Snorkelling on the island is safe and the beauty of this undersea paradise is easy to experience by simply wading into the shallow waters.

In the late afternoon we return to our camp as the sun sets over the palm lined beaches of the mainland.

Day 5

Inhassoro

Today we take to the road and head north onto the Inhassoro peninsula. We drive along the top of the dunes, with the sea on our right and the lagoon to our left until we reach the famous mangrove forests – home to the rare Mangrove Kingfisher.

A picnic lunch is served at the northern tip of this spit of land at BD, where it is said that Diaz came ashore in search of fresh water.

Expect warm sea, snorkeling and more swimming.

With the necessary permits our drive takes us along the palm lined beach below the high water mark while practising “good conservation” driving techniques at all times. (Permits are provided)

Back in camp. An optional visit to “Johnson’s Bar” on the beach a short drive away, a stroll along the beach watching the fishermen, the Dhow’s, the locals and the azure, silent waters.

Dinner: Local fish and seafood braai around the campfire, under the clear night sky.

Day 6

Inhassoro

We have the flexibility today to either relax in camp, or as our beach driving permits are valid a drive along the beach. (Chat to your Tour leader).

A trip to the vibrant town of Vilanculos will not disappoint.  Renowned for its turquoise waters, abundant marine life and laid-back island vibe, this is the perfect place to sample freshly caught King Prawns (perfect when washed down with a 2M ice cold beer).  The Vilanculos Market (albeit small) is definitely worthy of a visit if markets are your thing.  Huge quantities of mango and coconut, benches of freshly caught fish, and locals socializing – this colourful market is a great opportunity to sample local life.

Day 7 & 8

Barra, Inhambane

A short drive today (4.5hrs) takes us from our chalets at Inhassoro to Neptune's Beach lodge further south along the coastline in Barra, Inhambane.  Neptune’s is situated on the beach just a few steps away from the warm Indian Ocean and the perfect spot for our next two nights!

Activities in the area include fishing, snorkeling with seahorses and local island Dhow trips. From an easy day relaxing on the beach, scuba diving (some of the best diving in the world) or surfing the waves, the next couple of days will be as chilled as an ice cold beer.

For the more adventurous, a short trip into Inhambane, a historic local town and the second oldest town in Mozambique, is a great way to spend a couple of hours.

(Dhow Trip at Neptune’s is included in the tour package)

Day 9

Sunset Beach, Xai Xai

After two nights in Barra we drive to Sunset Beach, approximately 60kms north of the town of Xai Xai.  Our campsite is set back amongst the dune forests, a short walk away from the impossibly blue sea and secluded beach that provide a tranquil setting for our last night along this coastline – before heading back inland.

Day 10

Limpopo Trans Frontier Park

Today we head inland towards Masingir and enter the Limpopo Transfrontier Park at the southern gate and spend the next 2 hours driving enjoying the park.

Our camp, the Aguia Pesqueira (Fish Eagle) Camp is situated halfway between Giriyondo and Massingir and is renowned for the fantastic views overlooking the Massingir Dam.  This is a really great spot and it is where we will spend our last night together around the campfire enjoying the unique bond of friendship that can only be made by fellow travellers who together, have experienced the magic of the African Bush.

Day 11

Departure

After breakfast our team escorts the convoy to the Giriyondo border post, just north of Letaba.

This is where we say our goodbyes and head home!

Answer

South Africa & Mozambique

Answer

Approximately 1 500kms

Answer

Kruger National Park

Answer

2x4 not recommended
4x4 vehicles must have good ground clearance & high profile tyres which deflate in sand
Fuel range of approximately 500kms

Answer

Not during the June & July tours when we will need to cross the Limpopo using a ferry. The ferry is only able to carry one vehicle at a time and with trailers, it is too time consuming.

However during the later tours in September and October when the river crossing is dry and no ferry crossing is required - then a trailer is possible but must be off-road trailers with big tyres not the entry level trailers with small wheels
